I contributed to an exhibition about Girl with a Pearl Earring that was be unveiled on Thursday June 8th. The exhibition contains a giant 3D print and a visualization of the creation and aging process of the painting. The visualization is based on scientific research conducted over the past 5 years. I worked on data cleaning and processing for the 3D print and collaborated with Abbie Vandivere (conservator at the Mauritshuis) to create the visualization of the past colors of ‘the Girl’. We digitally cleaned up the painting and returned the colors to their original state based on aged paint samples and expert knowledge. I animated the results and created the following explainer video that is featured in the exhibition:
A press release can be found at https://www.mauritshuis.nl/persberichten/who-s-that-girl/. More information and a comparison between the ‘current’ and ‘deaged’ version at https://www.mauritshuis.nl/ontdek-collectie/verhalen/meisje-met-de-parel/.
The exhibition was covered by New Scientist and I gave an interview to the Dutch national radio about the project.
